Baltes Wins The 1964 World Series - Revisited

By Ron Colson
, IL – Cordova Dragway Park’s Scott Gardner has found a winning combination for the World Series of Drag Racing by combining the best of drag racing’s history with top performers of today’s professional drag racing.  A special feature for the 59th Annual World Series of Drag Racing at the trend setting Illinois track will see Jerry Baltes, the 1964 event champion, appear along with the Croshier-Baltes-LavatoTop/Fuel Dragster that carried him to victory in that historic event.

Baltes last saw the popular Illinois track when he rolled out the gate with the event trophy and the lion’s share of the prize money in 1964.  According to Baltes, “ I have many fond memories of the Cordova track of the 60s, but from everything I’ve heard Cordova Dragway Park of today is truly a supertrack.”

In 1964 the San Diego based driver, who became one of drag racing’s first superstars, dominated the World Series of Drag Racing with an elapsed time of 7.82 seconds and a speed of 204.54 MPH.  In that era those performance marks created headlines in racing newspapers from coast to coast.

Race fans will be able to relive how drag racing was “in the day” along with a souvenir photo and an autograph from Jerry Baltes, one of the superstars who lived the legend of the World Series of Drag Racing.

Racer registration for the “Series” will begin Thursday, August 23rd.  Special show times will begin at 6:30 pm on both Friday and Saturday evenings.  Information is available at 309-654-2110.
